About Barrow River Special Area of Conservation

Located in southeast Ireland, the Barrow River Special Area of Conservation (SAC) protects a significant section of the River Barrow and its surrounding habitats, spanning across counties Carlow, Kilkenny, and Laois. The river itself is one of Ireland’s largest and longest rivers and plays a vital role in regional biodiversity by supporting important aquatic plants, fish species such as Atlantic salmon and otters, and a variety of wetland birds. The SAC includes riverbanks, floodplains, and adjoining woodland areas that create a mosaic of habitats essential for wildlife. The area holds special ecological significance due to the presence of nutrient-poor riverine habitats and the support it provides to protected and rare species under the EU Habitats Directive. Though primarily managed for conservation, visitors can enjoy peaceful riverside walks, birdwatching, and seasonal fishing, with the river’s calm flow lending itself to non-motorized paddle sports where permitted. The historical presence of traditional farming alongside the river adds cultural interest, with scattered heritage sites enhancing the visitor experience. The Barrow River SAC appeals chiefly to eco-tourists, anglers, and naturalists looking to experience relatively undisturbed river ecosystems in Ireland’s pastoral heartland.
